5 Kitchen Design Essentials
26th February 2019If you are planning a new kitchen you may be considering a kitchen island. Kitchen islands are very popular at the moment and adding one can be a really good idea. Here are some reasons why.
1. Extra Storage
Extra storage in the kitchen is always welcome. An island can contain both hidden and open storage. Sleek and stylish drawers and cabinets can be used to hide bulky items such as pots and pans. Shelves can be used to store recipe books, and other items you would like on display. Custom storage can also be designed to contain your wine collection, recycling bins etc. In addition by hooking up your gas, electricity and plumbing you can also use your island to site large appliances such as an under counter dishwasher, fridge, wine cooler, oven etc. In addition, the surface of the island can be used to house your sink or hob.
2. Extra Surfaces for Food Preparation
The bigger the free worktop space in a kitchen the better. However, with kitchen gadgets becoming more and more popular (coffee machines, food processors, juicers etc.) the amount of free work surface for food preparation can be limited. A kitchen island can provide lots of much-needed worktop for chopping, peeling and preparing your food in comfort.
3. Sociable Cooking
Preparing and cooking meals can sometimes be a bit of a chore. In kitchens without an island, this usually involves standing facing a wall (or wall cabinet) while you work. Having an island can make food preparation tasks much more sociable. It allows you to face into the kitchen while working and interact with family or friends at the same time. The extra work space also enables other people to help without everyone getting on top of each other.
4. Informal Dining Area
An island is a great way of adding an informal dining area to your kitchen. Children can use the space to do their homework, chit chat after school, or simply eat their dinner. They also provide a more informal space for the whole family to eat breakfast or lunch as well as somewhere for guests to hang out while you are preparing snacks, drinks or dinner.
5. Homework/Home Life Area
An island with a couple of bar stools can be the ideal space for your kids to do their homework. You can oversee their work and help them with any problems they have while you are preparing dinner. You can also supervise them if they are browsing online on their tablets, pcs or phones. In addition, it is a great area for the whole family to use for catching up on emails, browsing the internet, sorting out paperwork etc.
